The University of Nairobi may be
the best ranked among the
Kenyan public Universities
according to Webometricts
report 2012. However, an
investigation by the Standard
Media has provided shocking
revelations on prostitution
undertakings at the institution.
The report alleges that some
students, both male and female
and even the lecturers engage
themselves in the vice. While a
good percentage of the students
work hard on their academic
work, others opt to take the
shortcut and collude with
lectures who in turn award them
good grades in exchange for
s3xual favors .

A student interviewed by a
standard media journalist at the
institution (name withheld for
privacy) confessed that
prostitution is rife at the
institution. She went further to
admit that she and her friends
do occasionally engage in the act
mostly at night. She also
disclosed that some girls
transform themselves into
prostitutes and frequent joints
and streets where they seek and
meet their clients in exchange for
cash.
Not only do the students go out
at popular joints or streets to
engage in the vice but it also
takes place right at the center. As
one student confirms, “We have
particular halls in the campus
where these things happen.”
Another one remarked: “Even
our hostels are very much
corrupted with the vice”. “Incase
you want to sample the latest
state of the art vehicle in towns, I
suggest you make your way to
the women’s hall 13 and 20 at
our campus. The cars are usually
on a mission to pick up girls,
otherwise known as escorts,”
another student at the University
confesses.

Among the reasons cited by
students for engaging in the vice
is the high need for money. They
say that pressure to get extra
coins in order to meet daily
campus expenses and other
necessities is what prompts most
students to engage in the vice.
An excerpt from one girl reads as
follows, “Some of us receive a
thousand shillings in two or
three months from our parents,
what does a thousand shillings
do?” Jennifer, (not her real name)
poses.
Others however do engage in
the vice due to peer pressure
and sheer exploration. “ My
parents used to be very strict on
me when I was in high school, so
this is my time to explore life. I
don’t really do it for money. I
think I’m just addicted to the
practice since I was recruited
into it by fellow students two
years ago”, Irene, (not her real
name) discloses. Stella not her
real name also argues that “
pressure to a certain class in
campus by owning among other
things, several designer bags,
expensive shoes, dresses and
change of hairstyle at least every
month is a major contributor to
prostitution at the campus.”
The business at the campus has
also engulfed university boys
who play the middle men role of
pimping the girls to willing men,
who in turn award them
financial tips once they deliver
the girls. On a given venture, the
boys play a brother’s role to the
girls.

As a result of this business
venture, some of these students
have changed their hostel rooms
into show rooms well furnished
with state of the art music
systems and TVS and with
fridges stocked with the best
food and drinks.
